Invitation to THE BIG ART SALE

A BIG THANKYOU to all who supported this event.  The weather remained fine which made life a lot easier as work could be left on the verandah outside the studio, thus freeing up space inside.  A grand total of £220 was raised for Sightsavers.

Beyond Repetition- Lecture by David Joselit

Whilst researching my current area of investigation came across this lecture by David Joselit.  This is a must watch for anyone interested in finding out about Marcel Duchamps 'marketing' skills and how one object "The Fountain" is repeated time and time again and is always different.  This is a very simplistic explanation, just watch to find out more.

Bruton annual art exhibition

Once a year opportunity with Bruton Art Society so really had to get my skates on to get some work together.  Not much framed this year due as continuing with my experiments for degree course.  Decided to put in Landscape (Pink) and Transience 1 both of which had been entered and accepted for Open Exhibitions (R.W.A. and Black Swan) and were already framed and ready to go.

Landscape (Pink) Oil and ink on paper

Transience 1 Ink on paper (one of six images titled Transience)

Both of these works were generated during last academic year and reflect the new approach to my work.
In addition I submitted three small mixed media studies of the the figure within the urban landscape.  These reflected the concept of finding beauty in the unexpected and referenced my area of study into Japanese aesthetics and wabi sabi as well as using nude forms by famous artists, i.e. Matisse, Picasso and Modigliani. Five mounted works relating to the Urban Beauty theme were also submitted along with 30 greeting cards.  Exhibition showing at Bruton School for Girls, Bruton, Somerset 22nd to 29th March.

Furher experiments using photoshop, cropping images and using different applications.  I referenced the third image when working in print today.  Working direct onto printing plate using ink to lift a print onto paper to create a background to work over.   I had initially prepared these with the view to making paintings - that is still on the agenda.  However, I am looking forward to reviewing my last two weeks work produced in print - always exciting.  Just in case you are wondering the numbers signify the birth dates of me and my two brothers, 1942, 1947 and 1950.  The Ag is the symbol for silver.

Draft Proposal for Workshop REPETITION EQUALS DIFFERENCE

Finally finished the Draft Proposal, well, I hope I have!!  This has taken more time than I had anticipated as MEAA (Museum of East Asian Art requested full details re practical application).
This has been an excellent lesson in how to compile a 'lesson plan' schedule and to produce a more professional proposal.

Below is the first paragraph of the proposal explaining the concept.

REPETITION EQUALS DIFFERENCE

This workshop will provide an opportunity to examine what repetition represents in art, what happens when we attempt to repeat an image and why artists use repetition within their work.  We will examine the concept of repetition in some of its forms, i.e. shape, form, colour and pattern as an introduction to the workshop.
Students will select one object from the collection at the MEAA and then produce drawing studies of the object using four different media and processes.  This will provide a selection of material to evaluate and discuss on several levels in respect of repetition equalling difference.

Preparing to make a PAINTING!

As college was in state of flux on Thursday AGAIN.  After ascertaining situation focussed on some sketches.  Taking cropped images from my large ink painting of bracelet which I did in the studio using ink on paper.  When finished I photographed, happy result in that a beautiful strip of light was falling onto the work from the window.  This added a different dimension, echoing repetition equals difference and I took full advantage and captured on camera.
Below are some of the cropped images which I have been working on.  At present including three bracelet links to represent myself and my two brothers and using the dark and light to reference the time and circumstances in which we were born.
I have now decided to use a large square, ready primed canvas to work one of the sketches up to a painting in oil. The sketches are simple showing dark and light, shape and position.

.
These are all worked in ink so it is going to be interesting to see what happens when using oils.  I am already projecting ahead and wondering if I can make the oil thin and yet dense enough in colour to run down the surface of the canvas.  I will also try ink on a smaller canvasto see what happens.

Eventually got to the studio around 1.30 p.m.  Messed around preparing some grounds to experiment with various media for ideas I had. I am finding it difficult to get a consistent solid colour on support.  I will try applying media with a roller next time round.  Working on small sketches in multiples on different grounds, i.e. hardboard, canvas, paper.  Not enough time to develop ideas but ended up with some sketches for workbook.  Rather disappointing day creatively - c'est la vie.  Will continue next painting day.
Any tips on application of paint to get a consistent solid colour on support would be helpful.

Digital printing onto fabric

Exciting, received printed fabric from The Silk Bureau today.  I had selected two images for printing and liased with RuthMoserDesign regarding submitting images, supplier, choice of material and cost.  Final decisions were to use the two designs below.  This was a bit of an indulgence cost wise but the results are fabulous.  I shall need to research very carefully the best options for presenting them.  They have been printed onto heavy silk dupion and the results are excellent, good colour match and the detail has been retained throughout the designs. Designs below.

I decided to produce these as samples to include within my Business Practice module where I have been working with RuthMoserDesign. www.ruthmoserdesign.co.uk
Ruth was orignially a fine artist who went onto to do an M.A. in textile design.  She has successfully crossed over disciplines whilst retaining a painterly quality to her designs which are digitally printed onto a variety of fabrics and used in a variety of products.

This image references my current area of investigation, i.e. 'repetition equals differnce'.  It is worked in ink using a varigated comb on watercolour paper. The paper colour is not accurate here and should be a mellow cream hue.
